Tennessee State Senator Mark Pody (R-Lebanon) received the endorsement from Americans for Prosperity (AFP) State PAC in his reelection bid for State Senate District 17.
In a press release announcing a wave of endorsements for state-level races, AFP said it was “proud” to endorse the candidates who the organization said will be “solid additions to Tennessee’s General Assembly – joining the fight for lower taxes, constitutionally limited government, more freedom, and better education.”
Pody said he was “grateful” to receive AFP’s support in his reelection bid, adding, “This endorsement reflects a commitment to the conservative values that have guided my service in the Tennessee Senate: protecting taxpayers, supporting families, defending constitutional freedoms, and keeping Tennessee the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”
Pody joins State Senators Adam Lowe (R-Calhoun), Rusty Crowe (R-Johnson City), and ten state house candidates in being backed by AFP.
AFP’s endorsement of Pody comes as he faces challenger Butch Baker in the August 6 Republican primary.
Pody was elected to the Tennessee Senate in 2017. He represents parts of Davidson and Wilson Counties.
During an interview with The Tennessee Star’s CEO and Editor-in-Chief Michael Patrick Leahy last year, Pody detailed how his representation as a Republican in Davidson County is vital for local Nashville needs to be supported by the supermajority Republican General Assembly.
“If there’s legislation going through and Davidson County needs it or wants it, I tell [Nashville Democrats], if you guys are going to try and get this through and you don’t have me a part of it, it’s not going to go through,” Pody explained at the time.
“There can’t be a piece of legislation that [Nashville Democrats] would want to go through that if I said to the delegation, ‘No, this needs to stop,’ I think that our caucus would stand with me,” he added.
Early voting for the August 6 primary begins July 17.
