Tennessee Democrat State Rep. G.A. Hardaway Dies at 71

by | Apr 24, 2026

Tennessee State Representative G.A. Hardaway (D-Memphis) died at the age of 71 after passing away early Friday morning at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville following a brief illness, his family announced.

Hardaway began his legislative career in 2007, representing Tennessee’s 92nd House District before moving to the 93rd District in 2013. His district included neighborhoods such as Orange Mound, Binghampton, Highland Heights, and parts of Cordova.

At the time of his death, Hardaway remained an active member of the Legislature and intended to seek reelection in 2026. His campaign recently faced a challenge after election officials determined he was one valid signature short of qualifying for the ballot. Hardaway and his team were pursuing options to contest the decision or mount a write-in campaign.

In a statement, the Tennessee Democratic Party praised Hardaway’s service, saying he “served with integrity” and “never lost sight of who he was fighting for.”

Leaders across Tennessee echoed those sentiments, describing him as a tireless advocate, a principled legislator, and a devoted friend.

Governor Bill Lee said he and his wife, First Lady Maria Lee, are “deeply saddened by the death of Representative GA Hardaway, a friend & dedicated public servant who faithfully represented Memphis in the General Assembly for nearly 20 years.”

“We pray God’s comfort & blessing over his family & loved ones during this time,” Bill Lee added.

Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) also released a statement, where he called Hardaway a “highly respected leader and a dedicated community servant.”

“He was a man of deep faith, always showed grace and never turned away from an opportunity to be someone’s mentor or offer advice. He left a lasting impression on all who knew him. We will truly miss him. My prayers are with his family and the entire Memphis community during this difficult time,” Sexton said.

Hardaway is survived by his three children.
