Senate Vote on Iran Military Action Could Backfire on Democrats, Judson Phillips Says

by | Mar 5, 2026

Judson Phillips, founder of Tea Party Nation, said Democrats may regret forcing a Senate vote to limit the president’s military action against Iran, predicting Republicans will use the vote as a central campaign issue in upcoming midterm elections.

On Wednesday’s edition of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show, Phillips said the political implications of the Senate vote on a war powers resolution could be significant.

“Think about what is happening here from a political point of view,” Phillips said. “You are gonna have every Democrat in the Senate going on record about what they think about the war with Iran, the conflict with Iran, whatever term you wanna use, the military operation. Every one of them is going to go on the record.”

The vote stems from a resolution promoted by U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) that seeks to limit the president’s authority to continue military operations without congressional approval under the War Powers Resolution.

Senators voted 47-53 to tank the bill Wednesday afternoon.

Phillips correctly predicted that most Democrats, with an exception for Pennsylvania U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), would support the measure in opposition to the president’s actions in Iran.

He argued that such votes could be used by Republicans during the midterm election campaign.

“All these Democrats are gonna be on the record opposing President Trump, opposing a military action that most Americans agree with,” Phillips said. “This is incredible fodder for the election this fall.”

He added that Republicans should emphasize the issue in campaign messaging.

“This is what Donald Trump should be saying. This is what JD Vance should be out there saying. This is what every sane Republican should be out there saying: The Democrats support Iran. The Democrats support Islamic theocracy. The Democrats support terrorism,” he said.

Phillips also suggested Democrats could avoid political damage by not forcing votes on the issue.

“I’m loathed to advise the Democrats to do anything,” he said. “But if I were crazy enough to advise the Democrats, I would tell them to sit down and shut up. Because for them, this is a no-win scenario.”
