Tennessee U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett to Be Next DOGE Subcommittee Chair

by | Jan 9, 2026

U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN-02) was selected as the chair of the U.S. House Oversight Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Chairman James Comer (R-KY-01) of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee made the announcement on Friday.

The subcommittee chairmanship became vacant this week after its original chair, U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA-14), officially resigned from Congress.

Created by the Trump administration, the subcommittee was created to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and to implement the department’s recommendations to root out and reduce wasteful government spending.

Burchett announced in December his interest in chairing the subcommittee following Greene’s impending exit from Congress, saying at the time he believes he has the “backbone” and “guts” to root out wasteful spending and hold legislators’ feet to the fire when it comes to cutting such funds.

Comer called Burchett a “strong advocate for commonsense solutions to excessive government spending” and said the Tennessee congressman will be “very effective at working jointly with the Oversight Committee and the Trump Administration to root out waste, fraud and abuse in Washington.”

Burchett said he was “honored” Comer “bestowed this great responsibility” upon him in leading the subcommittee.

“The American people are fed up with wasteful spending and fraud in the federal government. Under my leadership, I will eliminate reckless spending, slash unnecessary bureaucratic red tape, and investigate the rampant fraud and abuse in government,” Burchett said.

“When the American people elected President Trump in a landslide victory in 2024, he had a mandate from the voters to slash harmful spending and attack waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal bureaucracy. I am looking forward to being a partner to President Trump, Chairman Comer, and my colleagues across the aisle to restore trust in government,” he added.
