Republicans Need Unified Message to Beat Progressive Narratives, State Senator Mark Pody Says

by | Dec 5, 2025

Tennessee State Senator Mark Pody (R-Lebanon) emphasized the importance of a unified communication strategy within the Republican Party, arguing that clarity and consistency are essential to winning the messaging battle against the Left’s progressive talking points.

On Wednesday’s edition of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show, Pody said that Democratic messaging – particularly on issues like healthcare – often relies on repeating arguments he considers misleading.

To push back on the Democrats’ messaging, Pody said he believes Republicans must respond with a streamlined message that clearly explains their policy positions.

He pointed to the election-night speech by State Representative Aftyn Behn (D-Nashville), the defeated Democratic candidate in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, noting she used her remarks to lecture Republican victor Matt Van Epps about preserving Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Pody argued the moment illustrated how Democrats continue to defend what he described as a “broken healthcare system” of their own making.

“[Republicans] have to fix healthcare. But you can’t do it by putting good money down a garbage disposal. You’ve gotta find real reform to get it done, and it’s not going to be through Obamacare. If we look at what the prices are, it’s unaffordable care. It is not the affordable care that they were promising and her coming in and saying, ‘let’s just keep trying to fix a broken system,’ it’s not the right way,” Pody said.

Emphasizing how Democrats are insisting Republicans maintain policies that have led to higher prices, reduced options, and “broken promises,” Pody said Van Epps’ win in the 7th District shows that voters are frustrated with Democratic attacks and fear-based narratives about Republicans, specifically when it comes to healthcare costs.

“You can continue to tell a lie as many times as you want. It still doesn’t mean it’s true,” he said.

Moving forward, Pody said Republicans must articulate a simple and cohesive explanation of how their preferred approaches, such as free-market healthcare reforms, differ from the progressive alternatives being promoted.

“As Republicans, we have to say, here is the clear message: the free market can work. You have to get regulations off of it. The more that you can let people decide with their own money what is best for them and their family and not let the government make these decisions for you, it is up to each individual to make these choices and they’re going to make the right choices for their family. That’s what we want to get back to,” Pody explained.
