Tennessee Senators Blame Democrats for Prolonging Shutdown

by | Nov 11, 2025

After the Senate passed a continuing resolution to end the government shutdown, Tennessee senators blamed Democrats for prolonging it.

On Monday, the Senate voted 60 to 40 to end the longest federal government shutdown in American history, which lasted 41 days.

Seven Democrats, Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Dick Durbin (D-IL), John Fetterman (D-PA), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), joined Republicans in voting for the continuing resolution. Angus King (I-ME) also voted with Republicans.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) was the only Republican to vote against the bill.

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said on X that the “Senate Republicans just voted to reopen the government and defeated Chuck Schumer’s demands for $1.5 trillion in wasteful spending.”

“Remember: Democrats forced the longest government shutdown in U.S. history and inflicted needless pain all to appease the radical left,” she added.

Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) thanked the Senate Democrats for coming to “their senses to open the government.”

“For more than a month, 1.4 million federal employees have worked without a paycheck, including our military, law enforcement, air traffic controllers, those managing the nuclear arsenal, and more,” Hagerty explained on X.

“These families have suffered—at great expense,” he added.

Hagerty noted the government must open so it can start “serving the American people” again.

With the Senate passing the continuing resolution, it will now be sent to the House, where members are expected to vote on the bill as early as Wednesday afternoon. If the House passes the continuing resolution, it will be sent to President Donald Trump.

Trump said on Monday that he will accept the deal.

In the continuing resolution, the Affordable Care Act subsidies that Democrats fought for were not included.

Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA-17) called on Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to resign from his leadership position.
