Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr Suffers Nine Broken Ribs, Semi-Collapsed Lung from Horse Training Accident

by | Nov 12, 2025

Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr is currently hospitalized at the Vanderbilt Trauma Center in Nashville after suffering an accident Tuesday afternoon while training horses with his son at the family’s Lascassas farm.

Carr was originally transported by the Rutherford County Emergency Medical Service to a hospital in Murfreesboro before being transferred to the Vanderbilt Trauma Center, where he is undergoing evaluation and receiving treatment for nine broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and a semi-collapsed lung.

“This is the first time that I have spent the night in the hospital in 65 years. I’m glad it was from doing something I love. RCEMS and the medical teams have been awesome,” Carr said in a statement.

Both horses that were involved in the accident are unharmed, a press release from Carr’s office added.

Carr’s accident occurred one day after he hosted a crowd of more than 700 for his 10th annual T-Bones & Politics campaign event. U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN-02) and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs were among the special guests at Monday’s event.

Carr is currently seeking a second term as the mayor of Rutherford County.

He announced his reelection bid in September, saying that under his continued leadership, Rutherford County will “go from good to great and remain the best county to live, work, go to school, and raise a family.”
