Democratic activist David Hogg went to Tennessee last weekend to campaign for State Representative Aftyn Behn (D-Nashville).
Behn is running against Republican Matt Van Epps to see who will be the next representative for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. The district opened after Mark Green retired in July.
While in Tennessee, Hogg called the congressional seat “youth-centric,” stating if young people come out and vote, the Democratic Party has the potential to flip the seat.
Hogg, who briefly held the position of Democratic National Committee (DNC) vice chair, added that Democrats can “send a clear message to Donald Trump and Republicans across the country,” by saying they are “done with their bull***t.”
Hogg’s appearance marks another appearance by a Democratic leader advocating for Behn’s campaign. Last week, DNC Chairman Ken Martin campaigned for Behn, calling her a “terrific candidate.”
“We are on the verge of making history in this district,” Martin told Behn supporters.
On top of this, Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX-30) virtually campaigned for Behn last week. Crockett said at the Behn campaign event that it is “time for the people to take their power back.”
“You have the power to change the entire country’s lives with this one seat because our numbers are that close. Right now, [Republicans] have a three-seat majority. This would take them down to two. I am asking you to believe in the power of you. It comes down to you,” she stated.
The special election will take place on December 2nd. Early voting for the race runs from November 12 to November 26th.
Behn has previously stated that if her campaign wins this race, then it could establish a “Democratic playbook” on how the party can regain power in southern states.
If Behn were to beat Van Epps, she would be the first Democrat since 1983 to represent the state’s 7th Congressional District.
However, Cook Political Playbook, a nonpartisan election analyzer, rates the race between Behn and Van Epps as “Likely Republican.”
