TN-6 Republican Candidate Johnny Garrett: Washington D.C. Needs Tennessee Values

by | Oct 20, 2025

Tennessee House Majority Whip Johnny Garrett (R-Goodlettsville), who is running to represent Tennessee’s 6th Congressional District, said his campaign is rooted in bringing the Volunteer State’s common-sense conservative leadership to Congress.

Garrett, who was elected to the Tennessee House in 2018 and has run for reelection uncontested by a Republican since, launched his candidacy for the 6th District in July.

He has since raised over $725,000 and has over $700,000 of cash on hand going into the end of this year.

Garrettt said his campaign is centered around bringing a strong dose of Tennessee values to the nation’s capital and working with President Donald Trump to pass his America First agenda and bring prosperity lost under the Biden administration back to Tennesseans.

“The people of the 6th District deserve a congressman that wants to work for them and work to make sure that we can pass President Trump’s agenda…In the remaining term of President Trump’s presidency, we need a Congress that’s going to stand with him, and I’m excited to talk to folks in the 6th District about what we can do to help President Trump bring more prosperity back to Tennessee,” Garrett said on The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.

Garrett went on to attribute the optimism he sees among voters in the 6th District to President Trump’s leadership while also acknowledging that many constituents remain concerned about economic issues, especially inflation and high costs at the grocery store, lingering from the Biden administration.

“People are still concerned about the ridiculous amount of inflation that took place over Biden’s autopen presidency. They’re still dealing with pocketbook issues and they’re excited about President Trump, when the big, beautiful bill passed on July 4th, and the repercussions of what that bill is doing for people’s pocketbooks back home,” Garrett said.

Garrett went on to frame himself as the “conservative fighter” running for the 6th District.

“[Voters in the 6th District] are excited to see what’s going to happen next because just like President Trump, this campaign has seen enormous success and we are just getting started. Just like what President Trump is about to do for the next three years, we are just getting started on what we can bring back to the 6th District and what we can bring back to Tennessee to make people prosper,” he added.

Pointing to his role as Majority Whip in the Tennessee House of Representatives, Garrett described his job as a “communication conduit” within the caucus and said his experience managing legislative coalitions in a politically diverse environment will serve him well in Congress.

“We know as conservative Republicans, our ideals, our ideas, our policies are working here in Tennessee. That’s why I want to bring a little bit of Tennessee to D.C. because boy does DC need it, and President Trump needs conservative fighters that can bring the same values that we have right here in Tennessee, that I’ve got done in the Tennessee State House. President Trump needs a Congress just like that in D.C., and I can’t wait to get up there,” Garrett said.

In addition to his intention of introducing a bill that would make Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors a nationwide law as his first piece of legislation, Garrett said he also plans to advocate for Tennessee’s farming industry if elected to Congress.

“Our farmers are struggling a little bit. The ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ that President Biden pushed actually did the exact opposite. Farmers are hurting. The cost of putting the food into the ground and getting it out to people’s tables is astronomical,” Garrett said.

“President Trump, through his deals that he’s making with other countries, he’s really looking after our farmers and paying attention to that industry. We have to make sure we support our farming industry, and I’m looking forward to being an advocate for them up in D.C. to make sure that agriculture remains our largest commodity here in Tennessee, not just in the 6th district,” he added.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its Tennessee chapter filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of a coalition of voters and Memphis-based organizations on Monday challenging Tennessee’s newly enacted congressional redistricting plan, alleging that Republican lawmakers intentionally dismantled the state’s only “black-majority” congressional district in violation of the U.S. Constitution.

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, the lawsuit accuses the “all-white supermajority” in the Tennessee General Assembly of unlawfully “cracking” Memphis into three separate congressional districts in order to “dilute” the black “voting power” and eliminate black voters’ ability to elect a candidate of their choice to Congress.
