Shelby County Government Supervisor Indicted for Allegedly Smuggling Illegal Contraband into County Jail

A Shelby County Pre-Trial Services supervisor has been indicted and arrested following a sweeping investigation into contraband trafficking at the Shelby County Jail.

On Tuesday, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) announced 30-year-old Nakesha Humphrey was taken into custody last week after detectives uncovered her alleged involvement in smuggling illegal items into the jail.

The SCSO said the investigation into Humphrey (pictured above) began when narcotics detectives identified an inmate as the central figure in an ongoing contraband operation inside the facility.

Surveillance and intelligence gathering revealed that the inmate was working with an accomplice outside the facility—specifically, a woman who was “responsible for obtaining and delivering contraband” into the jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

Humphrey, who was identified as the accomplice in the investigation, “used her assignment inside the Jail through her position as a Pre-Trial Services Supervisor to smuggle in contraband,” the SCSO said.

Upon executing a search warrant on Humphrey’s residence, detectives discovered a “small amount of marijuana” and additional evidence supporting Humphrey’s alleged role in the smuggling operation, the sheriff’s office said.

Humphrey was indicted and arrested after her case was presented to a grand jury. She faces multiple felony charges, including official misconduct and two counts of bringing contraband into a penal institution, and her access to the jail has since been revoked.

The SCSO stated the investigation remains ongoing, which may result in additional charges being filed.

As of Tuesday, Humphrey remains in custody at Jail East on a $100,000 bond.

Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner said Humphrey’s case represents a “serious breach of public trust and a threat to the safety and security” of the Shelby County Jail.

“We hold our employees and the employees of other county agencies who work within the Shelby County Jail to the highest standards, and any actions that compromise the integrity of our justice system will be fully investigated and prosecuted. It is disheartening when supervisors are charged with these types of felonies,” Buckner added.

Humphrey’s arrest is the latest in a string of contraband-related incidents at the Shelby County Jail.

Earlier this year, several inmates were indicted in connection with a drug trafficking scheme that allegedly involved coordinated efforts both inside and outside the jail.

In a separate case last year, two SCSO deputies were charged with smuggling drugs into the facility.
