Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis told the Memphis City Council on Tuesday that it appears the National Guard will be coming to Memphis on Friday.
Davis said her police department is having direct communication with National Guard leaders about what the daily deployment of guard members will look like when they arrive in Memphis.
Davis said a “small contingent” of National Guard troops is in the city, but they are trying to arrange “accommodations and logistics” for the incoming guard members.
Last week, the Memphis Safe Task Force began with federal law enforcement agents arriving in Memphis to collaborate with state and local law enforcement in reducing the city’s crime.
Governor Bill Lee said this task force could occur in phases over the “next weeks and months.”
As of Monday, the Department of Justice reported that it had made 321 arrests, according to Fox 13.
Before this task force started, Memphis saw a reduction in its overall crime rates, Davis told city council members.
At the meeting, the police chief also gave a presentation about how Memphis has seen a reduction in its crime rate.
To illustrate, the number of crimes committed during the first nine months of 2023 compared to the first nine months of 2025 decreased by 35 percentage points.
From 2024 through September 30th, 2025, all major crime categories have fallen across the board: murders are down 22 percent, aggravated assaults decreased 19 percent, sexual assaults dropped 18 percent, robberies fell 21 percent, burglaries declined 19 percent, larcenies diminished 20 percent, and motor vehicle thefts plummeted 40 percent.
For the city’s nine precincts, the crime rate has dropped on average by 44 percent in the first nine months of 2025.
Davis noted the police department is not getting as many calls for aggravated assaults and homicides.
The police chief added that Memphis community members tell her that they “feel the difference” in the crime reduction.
