DOJ Announces Creation of Second Amendment Task Force

by | Apr 9, 2025

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Tuesday that it will create a Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force.

In a memo to employees, the DOJ said the Second Amendment has been “treated as a second-class right” in America, but now, the department will use its “full might” to protect it for law-abiding citizens.

The memo cites President Donald Trump’s executive order (EO) protecting Second Amendment rights.

“The Second Amendment is an indispensable safeguard of security and liberty. It has preserved the right of the American people to protect ourselves, our families, and our freedoms since the founding of our great Nation,” the EO said. “Because it is foundational to maintaining all other rights held by Americans, the right to keep and bear arms must not be infringed.”

This EO directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to assess ongoing infringements of this constitutionally guaranteed right and create a plan of action for Trump to “protect the Second Amendment rights of all Americans.”

This EO wanted Bondi to examine the rules and regulations the federal government made around the Second Amendment during the Biden administration.

“The prior administration placed an undue burden on gun owners and vendors by targeting law-abiding citizens exercising their 2nd Amendment rights,” the attorney general said. “The Department of Justice’s new 2nd Amendment Task Force will combine department-wide policy and litigation resources to advance President Trump’s pro-gun agenda and protect gun owners from overreach.”

On Monday, the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) repealed a Biden-era regulation that sought to reclassify certain firearms as short-barreled rifles. An appeals court blocked this regulation last year.

Bondi said in the memo that the department will continue implementing this executive order.

“The Task Force is principally charged with developing and executing strategies to use litigation and policy to advance, protect, and promote compliance with the Second Amendment,” the memo says.

The memo says Bondi will chair the task force, and the associate attorney general will be its vice chair. This task force will feature people from different parts of the DOJ, including the ATF and the FBI.
