Second Lady Usha Vance to Visit Greenland this Week

by | Mar 24, 2025

Second Lady Usha Vance will lead a U.S. delegation and be accompanied by one of her sons during a visit to Greenland this week, the White House announced on Sunday.

Vance will travel to Greenland on Thursday where she will “visit historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race,” a press release from the White House said.

“Ms. Vance and the delegation are excited to witness this monumental race and celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity,” the release said.

In a video posted to Instagram, Vance, addressing Greenalnders, said she is “thrilled” to visit the island in the coming days to attend the dogsled race and learn about its “land, culture, and traditions.”

“I’m particularly thrilled to visit during your national dogsled race, which our country is proud to support as a sponsor. I’ve been reading all about it with my children, and I’m amazed by the incredible skill and teamwork that it takes to participate in this race,” Vance said.

“I’m also coming to celebrate the long history of mutual respect and cooperation between our nations, and to express that our relationship will only grow stronger in the coming years. I look forward to meeting many of you soon and to learning from you about your beautiful land, culture, and traditions,” Vance added.

Vance and the delegation, which reportedly includes U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Chris Wright and national security adviser Mike Waltz, are scheduled to return on Saturday.

The second lady’s visit to Greenland comes as President Donald Trump continues his push for the U.S. to acquire the island, which is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Earlier this month while meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House, Trump said the U.S. “needs” Greenland for “international security” reasons as adversaries Russia and China increase activity in the Arctic.

Coupled with the president’s recent calls for Canada to become the 51st U.S. state, The Tennessee Star’s CEO and Editor-In-Chief Michael Patrick Leahy believes Trump’s endgame is for the U.S. to seize the Canadian territories north of the 60th parallel – Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut – to fortify the area stretching from Alaska to Greenland with defenses in the event of Arctic incursions by Russia or China.
