Tennessee U.S. Representative Diana Harshbarger (R-TN-01) is sponsoring a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would direct the U.S. Treasury Department to print $250 Federal reserve notes featuring the portrait of President Donald Trump.
The two-page bill, introduced by U.S. Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC-02), is being called the Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act.
The legislation would amend the Federal Reserve Act to require the Secretary of the Treasury to print Federal reserve notes in the denomination of $250 featuring Trump’s portrait no later than one year after the bill is enacted into law.
In addition, the bill would also create an exemption to previous legislation which bans living figures on currency to allow individuals who have served as President to appear on currency.
Noting how 2026 is America’s 250th birthday, Wilson said the printing of $250 Federal reserve notes would not only “help families carry less cash” but also “symbolically recognize the President of the United States during the Semiquincentennial anniversary.”
“Bidenflation has destroyed the economy forcing American families to carry more cash. President Trump is working tirelessly to fight inflation and help American families. This achievement is deserving of currency recognition, which is why I am grateful to introduce this legislation. The most valuable bill for the most valuable President,” Wilson said in a statement upon introducing the bill.
Harshbarger was one of three original sponsors of Wilson’s bill.
The creation of a $250 Federal reserve note would make the eighth denomination of American currency, which currently is distributed in $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 notes.
Last month, Trump signed an executive order titled “Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday” which establishes Task Force 250 – a White House Task Force that is directed to “plan, organize, and execute an extraordinary celebration of the 250th Anniversary of American Independence.”
During his campaign, Trump envisioned celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday by holding a “Great American State Fair” at the Iowa State Fairgrounds and coordinating with all 50 governors to feature pavilions at the one-time event from all fifty states.
