Tennessee U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn Sworn into Second Term

by | Jan 6, 2025

Tennessee U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) was officially sworn into her second term in the U.S. Senate last week as she took the oath of office administered by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

Blackburn, who was first elected to the Senate in 2018, said it is an “honor” to represent the Volunteer State in Congress.

“Every single day, I am determined to fight for Tennesseans and represent their voice in Congress,” Blackburn said after being sworn into office.

In the 119th Congress, Blackburn said her priorities will be to work on “cutting taxes, getting the economy working again, securing our border, and protecting children online.”

“There is no shortage of tasks for the Senate to tackle…We must also continue to combat the New Axis of Evil, fight human traffickers, increase access to health care for veterans, and keep men out of women’s sports,” Blackburn added.

Over 100 Tennesseans joined Blackburn for her swearing-in ceremony in Washington D.C. on Friday, including Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-Franklin), Tennessee State Representative Chris Todd (R-Madison County), and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs.

During the 118th Congress, Blackburn introduced 148 pieces of legislation – 15 of which passed the Senate and one, the REPORT Act, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Blackburn won her reelection bid against Tennessee State Representative Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville) in the November 5 general election by a nearly 30-point margin. Blackburn will be up for reelection again in 2030.

In her reelection bid, Blackburn was endorsed by President-elect Donald Trump, who, at the time, said the incumbent senator was “doing a terrific job representing the incredible people of Tennessee in the United States Senate.”

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, the lawsuit accuses the “all-white supermajority” in the Tennessee General Assembly of unlawfully “cracking” Memphis into three separate congressional districts in order to “dilute” the black “voting power” and eliminate black voters’ ability to elect a candidate of their choice to Congress.
