Matt Boyle, the national political editor at Breitbart News, said the establishment media appears to be “barreling down the pathway towards extinction” with its continuous publication of propaganda-like content and straying away from fact-based journalism.
Boyle made the remarks on Thursday’s edition of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show while discussing the Trump administration’s embracement and encouragement of new media and independent voices in the field.
On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt held the first press briefing of the Trump administration where she called on Boyle, who asked the press secretary about how the administration plans to bring in “more voices” to the briefing room.
Leavitt told Boyle she “takes great pride” in opening up the briefing room to “new media voices to share the president’s message with as many Americans as possible.”
Discussing Tuesday’s press briefing, Boyle said it felt like “things have really changed” in the national media landscape.
“The establishment, legacy, old guard media is fading. They’re like the dinosaurs and we’re like the mammals, the new media. We’re coming along to replace them because we’re doing things that they’ve failed to do over the last 20 years and really longer,” Boyle explained.
“We’re asking legitimate questions about legitimate issues instead of trying to lecture and dictate to people how they’re supposed to live their lives. We’re actually trying to get information about interesting things and try to inform the public and challenge public officials. We’re doing what’s called journalism, and they’re doing what’s called propaganda. I think that as the establishment media collapses – and it’s their own doing, by the way, they could all fix their problems right now – more and more people are turning to new places, whether that’s Breitbart…or other publications,” Boyle added.
Moving forward, Boyle said the only way he believes the establishment media can become relevant again and regain the public’s trust is by “asking real questions and focusing on real issues” while also “knocking off the nonsense like the hoaxes they perpetrated against Donald Trump over the last eight years.”
“They can choose extinction, or they can choose relevance and survival. I think that, as it stands right now, they’re barreling down the pathway towards extinction and we’re barreling down the pathway towards survival,” Boyle said.
